To legally operate in the state in which you do business, you must satisfy any applicable license, permit, and tax registration requirements. Almost all state, county, and local governments require businesses to obtain one or more licenses or permits. Additionally, tax authorities sometimes require business owners to register if they will sell taxable goods or hire employees.
Need to register a DBA in California?
If a company operates under a name other than its legal name, it must register a "Doing Business As" (DBA) name with the appropriate state, county, city, or town government. For example, Henry Johnson might register "Johnson Transportation" as a DBA. Similarly, "Jane's Flower Shop, LLC" might register the DBA, "Jane's Decorations".
Some government offices refer to a DBA as a "trade name", "assumed name", or "fictitious name". In California, LLCs register DBAs at the county level. California DBAs expire after five years.
